The Bankruptcy Process

Filing for bankruptcy generally involves preparing a petition detailing assets, income, expenses, and debt owed to all creditors, and other financial information, and filing in bankruptcy court. Upon filing, the court grants an automatic stay that prohibits creditors from any contact regarding payment collection, or from freezing bank accounts, garnishing wages, or filing or continuing a lawsuit or foreclosure action. The process varies depending on the type of bankruptcy filed.
