Former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson speaks out

| Nov 17, 2016 | Sexual Harassment |

Last July, former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson filed a lawsuit against Fox News alleging systematic sexual misconduct in the workplace. She also alleged that former Fox Chief Executive Officer Roger Ailes played a role in her firing for not addressing his sexual advances.

The claim never went to court, however, as the parties settled for a reported $20 million dollars. Although sexual harassment claims happen across the United States, it is rare that a case involving popular public figures were involved. Since gaining a national spotlight, Carlson has taken on the role of further addressing her situation and reaching out to employees across the United States to spread awareness and to help women in the workplace to fight against sexual harassment.

Unfortunately, such instances are alarmingly common, although in many instances the situation is never reported. Thus, these incidents are never properly addressed. According to the National Women’s Law Center, nearly 50 percent of women have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace. All too often, in an effort to not cause issues in the workplace or to draw attention to oneself, female employees do not file a complaint against their employer.

Carlson stresses that in the current culture we live in, that we may not be doing enough. She urges any female worker who feels that she may be subjected to sexual harassment to file a claim not only with the company’s human resources but also outside the company. This will make certain that the issue is properly and timely addressed. This will help not only the current victim but also fellow and future employees who may be subjected to the same conditions in the workplace.
