Gay man sues employer over reduction in salary

Most lawsuits involving pay discrimination between male and female employees involve claims that women are not paid as much as men who perform the same or similar work. A lawsuit recently filed in New York City provides a new twist to the usual tale. There, a gay man is alleging that his pay was cut almost in half so he would be on a par with "other females in the office."

The defendant company stages promotional events for a number of large, well-known companies including Nike, Twitter, and Amazon. The employee had been hired from a similar firm in Boston. When employees began to comment on a ring he wore on his left hand and ask if his "wife" wore a similar ring, the plaintiff told them that his male partner wore an identical ring. According to the man's attorney, once the company's CEO and the man's supervisor learned that the employee was gay, the CEO and the employee's supervisor began to exclude him from important meetings.

After several weeks of excluding the plaintiff from meetings and social events in the office, the CEO called the plaintiff into his office. The CEO allegedly told the man that he could not sleep at night knowing that the employee was being paid so much more than "the other females in the office." The CEO also allegedly told the plaintiff that his salary was being reduced from $145,000, the amount they had initially agreed upon, to $70,000.
