New Yorkers understand how important employment is. They work hard at keeping their jobs and earning promotions. One thing that can hinder career advancement and can create a hostile work environment is workplace discrimination. Many readers are aware of the fact that discrimination based on race, gender, age and religion continue to happen at work even though these acts are illegal. Some of the victims choose to remain silent for fear of retaliation while others speak up and exercise their rights.
A 43-year-old woman, a former employee of Alexander McQueen, claimed that she was a victim of race discrimination during her 10 years of service at the boutique. The woman stated that her boss referred to her by several different derogatory names. Her former boss also allegedly accused her of using cocaine while on duty and stealing merchandise. The woman also stated that her boss falsely accused her of stealing before he terminated her in 2012. Another reason cited for her dismissal was working during her day off.
The woman filed a lawsuit against the store, alleging discrimination based on race and origin. The lawsuit states that two other employees were also terminated for complaining about discrimination, which is a form of retaliation. The former employee is seeking damages of an unspecified amount.
The woman is not alone in her fight against the store. Last July, a 22-year-old former security officer filed a lawsuit alleging workplace discrimination.
Cases of workplace discrimination show that people still struggle with equality in the workplace and these incidents often take a toll on the emotional well-being of the victim. One way to alleviate the losses of the worker is by taking advantage of the law and filing a lawsuit against an employee or the employer. The plaintiff’s losses, such as lost wages, may be compensable.
