Working with your employer for vacation scheduling

As we sweat through the dog days of summer, it’s not uncommon for workers and their families to go on vacation. In the tri-state area, we are especially lucky; we can head north and west into the woods of Catskills or Adirondacks, or east and south to the Jersey shore or the beaches of Long Island – all within a few hours drive.

It’s well documented that vacation time is healthy for a worker. This is true regardless of your occupation; vacation is healthy both for the body and mind. Full time employees are often even granted paid vacation time. It is important to keep this in mind when requesting vacation time. Bosses and supervisors must make efforts to accommodate you and your requests when establishing these vacations.

It isn’t always easy for workers to coordinate and schedule their time off with their employers, and conflicts are sometimes inevitable, especially before and after holidays. Offering some flexibility and working with your supervisors can prove to be beneficial in the long run. But making certain that your employer handles your requests promptly and fairly is important as well.

If you feel your employer is not handling your vacation requests fairly, they may be in violation with your employee handbook and thus violating your employee rights. If you are unable to rectify the situation with your boss, you may need to speak with a superior, someone at human resources, or even consider meeting with a legal professional familiar with employment law to proceed.
